Mechanical Thinning

Over the past century blossom thinning has traditionally been done by hand in South Africa. Now there are machines that are available to do blossom thinning and in this movie we’re going to have a look at some of the machines on the market.

Both stone fruit and pome fruit can be thinned by machine. The type of machine used will depend on the shape of the tree.

In this video we have a look at the different methods that are used to thin trees mechanically and compare the Darwin and the Baum mechanical thinning machines.

The settings on the machine can be adjusted to suit the trees in the orchard. If a note is kept for each orchard, the machine can be set to the same settings the following year to achieve the best results in every orchard.
