In order for fruit to form on a fruit tree, pollen from one flower needs to be taken to a flower, which it will fertilize.

All deciduous fruit varieties need to be pollinated, although some are self fertilizing. Peaches and Apricots, for instance are self pollinating,

Virtually all apples and pears are not self fertile, so they need the pollen of a different variety to pollinate them.

Most plums are not self fertile, although plum varieties are being developed now that are self fertile. All peaches and apricots, as we mentioned, are self fertile.
